Dachshunds really can destroy an indestructible toy in under 3 minutes.

Most smooth coated dachshunds really DO NOT like cold, damp, snow, wet, fog, rain, wind or ice.

Dachshunds are easy to spoil.

Dachshunds can be quite spiteful if they don't get their way after you spoil them.

Dachshunds are very good at getting their own way.

Dachshunds are better at whining to get their way than most three year old children.

Dachshunds are scent hounds, don't bother trying to hide a toy from them. If they can't reach it or dig it out please read tip above.

Dachshunds can not tell time, so do not hide toys in your bedroom. If you do, don't blame me you missed the tip about whining.

It's easier to fall asleep to the sound of a squeaky toy than whining, they will get tired of the toy and fall asleep while they never grow tired of whining for the toy.

It is not easier to wake up to the sound of the squeaky toy at 3AM than a whining dachshund.

At 3AM hiding the squeaky toy under your pillow does not help you get back sleep.

Reaching for excellence~

CHIC is the Canine Health Information Center. A database of collected health screening and health information. Encouraging not only health screening but sharing of information to make the better choice to improve canine health. For more information on what a CHIC number means and how required tests are chosen please click here. For test specific to dachshunds, please click here.

For each of our dachshunds that have finished health screening, OFA, CERF and CHIC numbers are listed on their page. We do DNA testing for Cord 1 Visual Impairment.-a form of Progressive Retinal Atrophy, through the University of Missouri. Our dogs have Patellar Luxation Evaluations that are registered with OFA. They have routine CERF exams with a veterinary ophthalmologist and have had T4/FT4 thyroid panels.

In an effort to support the overall health of our dogs we titer annually, with the exception of the rabies vaccine, which must be given in accordance with state laws and will only booster vaccines as needed. We feed a holistic, high quality diet of Wellness Brand dry food as well as organic raw meat, bone, organ meats and vegetables.

We use and recommend Interceptor _Brand_ heart worm preventative and annually test for heart worms and Lyme disease. We will continue our reach for excellence as more DNA studies and tests become available and will take advantage of those that can help us to breed healthier dachshunds.

We are active in our local All Breed Club and MassFed, supporting responsible dog ownership. We show in the conformation ring and enjoy 'play' tracking, agility and, of course, hours of run-catch-destroy the squeak ball at a local field. We always enjoy meeting those interested in the breed at dog shows we are attending or by appointment to visit our home. We will be taking part in "Meet The Breeds" on September 21, 2008 in Devons, MA from 1 to 3 PM. This is an AKC official Responsible Dog Ownership event.

Dachshunds can make wonderful family companions. They are happy out playing and walking and just as happy to spend a day on the couch lounging. They can be litter box trained and do not require high exercise maintenance.

Before you consider a dachshund for yourself or family please, study the breed. Know all you can about health issues, temperament, energy level, drive and your own personal life style. Be honest about how much time you truly have to give to a puppy. Keep in mind you may have unexpected vet bills and please factor in a spay or neuter. It is not just responsible for keeping down the number of unwanted pets but entering into breeding well requires a significant investment in both time and money. There is seldom a reason to keep a companion animal intact.

Please be sure to read Canine Intervertebral Disk Disease, -Prepared for The Dachshund Club of America, Inc.- As well as visiting The Dodgers List for recommended reading, FAQ's about IVDD and to join their message board.
